Introduction by new Chair and Vice Chair of Governors

As the new Chair of Governors I just wanted to quickly introduce myself, and the new Vice Chair, and update you briefly on our current priorities.

I have been a parent governor for just over three years, Simon about a year longer. Simon and I have  daughters in year five at Selsdon and our eldest daughters are in year seven at Riddlesdown but were both at Selsdon from reception, so we have been involved with the school since 2006.

The recent changes in the governing body have been fairly substantial, with seven people leaving. This is due mainly to two reasons, firstly the official scope and focus of the role have changed, increasing the demands on volunteers time. In addition, the Local Authority expressed the view that changes to both the approach to governing and its leadership were required to help the school reach its goals during this time of change.

We have two clear priorities, as outlined by the Local Authority

  1. Support the school in making good progress against the main Ofsted priorities of good progress, quality teaching, effective leadership and good behaviour/safety, as well as pupils spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
  2. Resolve the issues regarding the future of the schools status, as touched on in communications last year.

The school has taken action in the last 12 months to improve its performance, resulting most notably the arrival of Susan Papas as our Executive Headteacher, along with significant changes to the senior leadership team.  There are now indicators of accelerated progress in the school and a plan for continued improvement, a coherent leadership team and a genuine sense of purpose, but as the saying goes, ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating.’

In terms of school status I am waiting for some clarification from the Local Authority on our options, but hope to outline, at least in broad terms, our options by the end of February. Any proposed changes will involve a consultation period to ensure that you have your say on the future of the school.

As always, any queries or questions for the Governing Body can be submitted via the office or sent to me at marked Governors.

Mick Forteath (Chair), Simon Powell (Vice Chair).

  1. It would be very helpful for parents to meet both Mick and Simon as well as the remaining members of the governors committee for an informal chat.
